The British Equine Hygienists Association (BEHA) is the representative body for the most experienced sheath cleaners and mare hygienists in the UK and internationally, trained by veterinary professionals

Our members adhere to a strict code of professional conduct and working practices, are trained by veterinary professionals to health check, comply with the Veterinary Surgeons Act 1966 Section 19.1, and engage in ongoing CPD training. As a testament to the standards we have established, insurers now require all new policyholders to be a member BEHA or other specific sheath cleaning association.

When it comes to your horse, we know just how much they mean to you and how much work you have put into that relationship with them. With no professional qualifications in sheath cleaning currently available in the UK it's not always easy to find a professional you know you can trust, let alone perform a safe, thorough and hygienic cleaning service.

As well as establishing industry standards and best practice to safeguard horse welfare, BEHA aims to stand out as the UK’s best and most trustworthy team of stallion, gelding and mare hygienists.

Collectively, BEHA members have treated tens of thousands of horses across the UK working closely with vets, equine physiotherapists, ESMT’s and saddle fitters to help resolve a host of behavioural and health issues originating from discomfort and disease in the sheath which is all too commonly overlooked.

Regrettably BEHA does not offer training courses or apprenticeships for new sheath cleaners because our membership is built on experience, reputation, and a commitment to the highest professional standards. Sheath cleaning and mare hygiene require an in-depth understanding of equine anatomy, health assessment, and safe handling—expertise that can only be gained through extensive hands-on experience and professional mentorship, rather than short courses.

New members are invited to join based on their proven track record, shared values, and dedication to best practices.  This is to ensure BEHA’s role to uphold industry standards and represent only those who have demonstrated excellence in the field, ensuring horse owners can trust in the skill and integrity of our approved hygienists.

We encourage all new sheath cleaning businesses to refer to BEHA's Code of Conduct  document for guidance on best practice.  Click Here
